A Data Matrix Code ist a two dimensional matrix barcode consisting of black and white cells or moduls arranged in either a square or rectangular pattern.
Dots Per Inch (DPI)
In scanning and printing, it is a linear measurement of the degree of addressability of fineness o pixel placement. Generally, more dots per inch mean a greater amount of visible detail in the image and larger file size.
Drop-On-Demand (DoD)
A drop-on-demand inkjet printhead differs from the continuous ones in that a physical process is manipulated to momentarily overcome the surface tension forces and emit a drop cluster of drops. The in supply is not sufficiently pressurized to form a continuous stream of fluid. Printhead systems utilizing piezoelectric technology and thermal technology operate in drop-on-demand mode.
E
EFPIA
The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Association is en european govering body of the national alliance inquiring Pharmaceutical Industries as soon as indvidual Pharmaceutical Companies.
Encoder
Electromagnetic component which outputs measured quantities such as degree, speed or direction of rotation ot the press in form of signals.
F
Firmware
ROMs with software and datat sotred by the system manaufacturer, therefore a specific combination of hard- and software.
Flowcontrol
Workflow System with specified Linoprint functions. The main component is the job ticket editor that defines the printing parameters and the layout of the variable printing substance.
G
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
The boundary between a user and a computer or programm, complex of hardware and software facilities deployed for the user action.
H
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
A series of formatting commands that describes the components of graphics and text material presented on the World Wide Web.
I
Inkjet
Printing process which bings the ink with nozzles to the surface of the material. The color output works piezoelectric or thmermal. Using up to six colors is possible. The printing unit use more than one hundred nozzles. The quality is comparable with four color printing.
J
Just-In-Time (JIT)
Is an inventory strategy impelemented to improve the return on investment of a business by reducint in-process inventory and ist associated carrying costs. In order to achieve JIT the process must have signals of what is going on elsewhere within the process.
L
Late Bind Variable Data
For marking and coding of in the packiging industry a system which will generate the variable data in time with printing.
M
Materials Compatibility
The fact that two materials can be used in combination without any negative effects.
Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
A structured document which provides information about specific chemicals including health hazards, precautions for use, safe handling etc.
N
Non Impact Printing (NIP)
Printing process, where the printing substrate is not in contact with the material. Moreover no cylinger is needed.
Nozzle
Used with inkjet printheads for selective control the discharge of inkdrops.
O
Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)
Manufactor of components or products sells them by himself.
Perpheral Component Interconnection (PCI)
An industry-standard bus for attaching peripherals to the computer.
P
Personalized Print Markup Language (PPML)
Is an XML-based industry standard printer language for variable data printing defined by PODi, an industry-wide consortium of 13 companies.
Piezoelectric Drop-on-Demand Inkjet (PIJ)
An inkjet design, whose prime mover is a piezoelectric material.
Pixel
Short for "picture element". A pixel is the smallest resolvable point of a raster image. It is the basic unit of digital image.
Portable Document Format (PDF)
An electronic document format from Adobe that allows the distribution of digital files across any plattform that can display the document as originally designed and formatted without having the software application or fonts on the viewing computer.
Postpress
General term for further processing on printing works after the printing process.
Preflight Check
Before the exposition an output process would be simulated. The data could analyze of needed fonts and application. It is also possible to put out warnings if something else is wrong.
Prepress
Operations, which are neccesary before starting the printing process like layout, type setting and image processing.
Prinect
Short for "print connect". Integrated workflow management system from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, which supports all working stage of the production of printing work.
Process Colors
The 4 colors cyan, magenta, yellow, black (CMYK) which can be mixed to create a diversity of colors in the color space.
Product Detect
A sensor to detect the presence of a printable substrate. Typical the product detects is realized by a light barrier.
Purge
Performed for a varity of printhead maintenance reasons, a purge is a regualted pressure applied for a fixed amount of time at the air interface to the in reservoire attached to the printhead to force ink, along with air bubbles and debris if present, out the jets through the nozzles.
R
Raster Image Processor (RIP)
A combination of computer software an hardware that controls the printing process by calculating the bit maps of images and instructs the pinting device to create the image. Entry Data Form is PDF or Post Script.
Remote Service
Internet based connection between machine and service angency. Using Remote Service the technician is able to make maintenance and diagnostics of the machine to minimize stoppages.
Rendering
Is the process of generating an image from a model, by means of computer programs. The model is a discription of three diemensional objects in a strictly defined language or data structure. It would contain geometry, viewpoint, texture, lighting and shading information. The image is a digital image or raster graphics image.

S
Satellites
Small droplets of jetting fluid gerated behind the main drop as the main drop detaches from the nozzle. The satellites will create a mist of in or an unsharp printed image.
Single Pass
A procedure of printing the image in one pass to get high speed results.
Solvent Inks
Inks whose carrier is an organic, usually volatile solvent.
Spot colors
Contrast to spot colors. Spot colors are use as a single color on the print and often special made on demand by the in manufacturer.
T
Thermal Inkjet (TIJ)
The Thermal Inkjet, or bubble jet, drop ejection process incorporates a heater located in the floor of an ink channel near the exit nozzle. A liquid-to-vapor-transition results in a volume expansion of the heated liquid.
